Об альбоме (сборнике)
With her present album Lyambiko harks back to this tradition of the pre-rock ’n’ roll era as well as to the exchange of cultural ideas between popular music in Germany and the United States. Her selection of songs spans the period from the late 1920s to the 1950s and is devoted in particular to songs from films and to German-American cover versions. These last-named releases raise an interesting point, since many of the Jewish composers and lyricists who left Germany for the United States after 1933 enriched America’s world of light entertainment with their creative energy and wit. And many of the musicians who were not persecuted on racial grounds and who remained in National Socialist Germany continued to develop a tradition that they had not infrequently picked up from their Jewish colleagues in the 1920s. In doing so they met a need for distraction and escapism that is always particularly pronounced under dictatorships. Some of these songs reflect this age on a more or less subliminal level, whereas others are simply wellmade examples of entertaining music that were inspired by international classics.
