Tony Overwater
Tony Overwater’s personal & contemporary tribute to both Oscar Pettiford’s playing & compositions ring true on this outstanding CD. “I realised one of my dreams with this recording” states Overwater “Ever since I heard his music, I wanted to record the music of Oscar Pettiford. It was in my 1st year at the Royal conservatory in The Hague that 1 of my teachers told me I sounded a bit like OP & that I should listen to his music. I was sure he either meant Oscar Peterson or Niels-Henning Pedersen. I had never heard of Pettiford.
As soon as I started exploring his records I was hooked. Pettiford’s music has a charm that lays somewhere between bebop, blues & chamber music. His lines & melodies are clear & transparent & his solos are a sort of abstract construction with the intensity & colourfulness of the blues.” “Tricotism” is an impossible composition in D flat major, next to G major the key OP mostly wrote in, & very difficult for a bass player because it doesn’t leave the player any note on an open string. This makes the notes sound brisk & firm. Pettiford’s combination of melancholy & realism is what I love,” says Overwater. “It is understated passion. His style was quite unique, straight on the beat with a clear attack, an articulate, frank tone with superior phrasing.” Oscar’s music lives on with Tony Overwater’s tribute. “What was it the American Indians said? Oscar’s spirit lives on in Tony’s form.”

Review
- Neil Patel / Avalon Acoustics June 2000
This release honours the music of Oscar Pettiford, an important bassist, from the 40′s & 50′s, that was a great inspiration to many bass players. The SACD features reed player Maarten Ornstein & drummer Wim Kegel & special guests, Ack van Rooyen (flugel) & Ernst Reyseger (cello). This release from Tony has sharp cutting tempos & rhythmic accents, the defining line between darkness & light. Musical textures & smells – alcohol, grass, cigarettes; a touch of darkness with open eyes, the transmigration of souls. Oscar’s spirit lives on in Tony’s form.
His friends called him OP. He changed the way the double bass is heard & played. He made the bass a genuine solo instrument & was the 1st to incorporate the cello into jazz ensembles. He’s played with Thelonious Monk, Coleman Hawkins, Roy Eldridge, Errol Garner, Max Roach, Woody Herman & Duke Ellington. An outstanding album full of killer jazz & double bass!
SA-CD .net review by JW May 2, 2003:
There is something in European Jazz that is different. The improvisation elements make it interesting in my opinion & it’s also more ‘intellectual’ – I guess that could be the right term for it. It’s been said before & I find that that term explains it for me, although I have difficulties putting its meaning to the exact words. There is a certain professionalism in European jazz that has its roots more in the music schools than in the American blues tradition. It’s also more gentle. Comparing this album to the McCoy Tyner & Stanley Clarke coop for example, one finds a more assertive style on the US disc. It’s also a little more predictable. Mind you, this may not be fair & they both have their merits. But the Overwater is best enjoyed with a good bottle of red, & the Tyner disc can be played at a party. Perhaps that’s a good way of explaining the difference. Jacques Loussier is also 1 of those ‘Europeans’. Not yet on SACD, but his CD’s are of exceptional recording quality.
The sonics of this SACD are good, but not up to the standard of say Beck’s Sea Change or other pure DSD recordings. I hesitated between 3 & 4 stars here, but when compared to another European Jazz disc from Acoustic Triangle, the benefits of DSD are clear.

Musicians:
Tony Overwater – Bass, Liner Notes
Wim Kegel – Drums
Ernst Reijseger – Cello
Ack Van Rooyen – Flugelhorn
Maarten Ornstein – Clarinet, Clarinet (Bass), Sax (Tenor)
Guests:
Ack van Rooyen (flugel)
Ernst Reyseger (cello)
