The K2 remasters are all good; I still havent find 1 that is not acceptable. But this 1 just made me open my eyes wide & my jaw dropped to the floor. Wow! you can feel the amp burning in your living room, like being in the famous Missile room where Wes used to play. This 1 has to be 1 of the best debut albums in jazz; no wonder why Wes was already considered the best guitar player around before he recorded this, his 1st album.
It is surely a great rarity to be able to rediscover the exact beginnings of a major artist. Something quite close to that occurs here: when Riverside producer Orrin Keepnews 1st heard Montgomery, the phenomenal guitarist was still at home, playing with this trio at an Indianapolis bar. So it must have sounded very much like this highly impressive debut album (including an unforgettable version of “‘Round Midnight”)–recorded just 2 weeks later!

The 1st of West Montgomery’s organ trio albums with Melvin Rhyne (who made his recording debut here) sounds definitely better in this SACD remastering. I had the OJCCD & still have the Riverside Montgomery box set, but here one gets better definition of the room ambience, better transients (you can hear the attack of the organ bass pedals!), more dynamics, a warm, detailed sound. Montgomery preferred a mellower approach to organ trio than most performers, so this is not as catching as some of his more energetic albums, but a lesson in subtlety.

The sound on this Hybrid/SACD release is amazing–you can hear every detail in the studio. My only complaint concerns tracks 6 & 8: these don’t sound like alternate takes, but rather demos or run-throughs, as the sound quality is inferior to the other tracks. Too many labels are mining everything in the can & re-issuing CDs with bonus material that is often of little value. If included, it should be at the end of the orignal album, not scattered among the regular tracks.
