All Across The City
For those who know Jim Hall he is a great jazz guitarist. On this disc he is partnered with 3 other talented musicians & together they make for great instrumental jazz. Just listen to the beautiful keyboard/synth layering & guitar playing on the 1st track & you get an idea of the talent involved. Very atmospheric to be sure. As with all Concord SACDs the sound is 1st rate & compares with the best sounding SACDs. The recordings are always superb & in pure DSD. Plus they are all multi-channel.
“All Across the City” released on Concord Records in 1989 is a very fine recording. Jim Hall who is known collectively as the “Godfather of Modern Jazz Guitar” really plays great jazz guitar. His subtle sense of swing, harmony, & melody have made him a legend. You can hear his influence in other jazz guitar masters like Pat Metheny, Bill Frisell, & John Abercrombie. You can probably even hear it in my own playing! Who knows!
I’m not going to talk too much about the music because the music can speak for itself, but let me add that this is a beautiful album. Every tune is just a world of its own. On a special note, Gil Goldstein gives a remarkable performance. His presence on this album gives it a very special feeling.
Pick this album up if you’re into jazz guitar & more importantly are a fan of Jim Hall. - J. Rich
All Music Review
Jim Hall’s successful blend of contemporary & mainstream jazz should appeal to both camps on this well-crafted CD. Hall displays the subtle quiet lyricism that makes his guitar sound instantly identifiable. Gil Goldstein is a perfect choice on keyboards, because he uses synthesizer only to color rather than overpower a song, while avoiding schmaltz. Both “Beja-Flor” & the title track benefit from his contributions. Though his piano is frequently in the background, it matches Hall’s hushed, effective guitar lines. Bassist Steve La Spina & drummer Terry Clarke frequently lay out during the introductions & then enter to add either gentle shadings or full steam, if needed. One of Jim Hall’s best CDs.
