By Ken Dryden:
Bucky Pizzarelli leads a strong quintet through this intimate live set at Makor, a Manhattan night spot. The seven-string guitarist is always game for anything, and with a superb group — including nearly everyone’s first-call bassist, Michael Moore, clarinetist Allan Vaché, vibraphonist Peter Appleyard (who previously worked with Benny Goodman, as did Michael Moore and the leader), and drummer Bernard “Pretty” Purdie — the veteran leads his group through seven favorites from the swing era. The set sounds very relaxed and informal, as if the musicians were playing for their own fun and had no idea tapes were rolling. A snappy take of “Perdido” and an extended workout of “Limehouse Blues” are but two of the memorable tracks recorded that evening. Suffice to say that if you own more than a couple of CDs featuring Bucky Pizzarelli, then you should pick up this very rewarding release.

bucky pizzarelli, as the NEW YORKER notes, is a truly elegant guitarist who can swing the contemporary noodlers right out of the room. mr. pizzarelli has been working for decades and has eschewed post-bop for pre-bop, emphasizing swing and truly melodic music. his imporvisations are not crammed full of notes, but rather explore the way a tune sings. he is remarkable for having dexterity, but also keeping the mood and emotion of every song he plays. this live performance captures him in prime form as he and his quintet run through a set of standards that somehow seem refreshed to be simply played, not bent beyond all recognition. it is wonderful to hear such energy and interplay. a recent critic noted that jazz sometimes forgets that its development does not mean completely cancelling out earlier forms in favor of later forms, mr. pizzarelli ably exemplifies this. this is fresh and fun, even if it evokes a style from days gone by.

I’ll keep this short. I have maybe 60-70 SACD and DVD-A discs. This one is in the top 2-3 in terms of sound quality. I’ll play it for people who have never heard SACD before and their minds are blown. If you sit in the center seat in my home theater and close your eyes when this disc starts, you feel like you are in a small jazz club in NYC. It starts off with some ambient crowd noise, the clinking of a few glasses as people are served drinks, and then the drums kick in and all you need is the stale smell of cigarettes to make the experience real. It’s a truly amazing recording. If you are an SACD enthusiast, or a new collector who needs a benchmark disc to `wow’ people with, this is it. A great sounding recording, and fun swing music as well
