Iron Maiden, released on 14 April 1980, is the debut album by the British heavy metal band Iron Maiden. It was released by EMI in the UK, reaching number 4 in the UK charts, and a few months later in the U.S., originally on Harvest/Capitol Records and subsequently Sanctuary Records/Columbia Records. The U.S. release also included the song "Sanctuary", only released in the UK as a single. In 1998, along with the rest of the band's pre-X Factor releases, Iron Maiden was remastered with "Sanctuary" added in all territories.
Although Iron Maiden have since criticised the quality of the album's production, the release was met with critical and commercial acclaim, debuting at No. 4 in the UK Albums Chart as well as achieving prominence for the band in mainland Europe.
*****
After several years of refining their songs and numerous personnel changes, Steve Harris 'n' the boys from Iron Maiden busted out of London's East End with the group's first official full length album. The year was 1980 and Maiden, along with the likes of Def Leppard, Diamond Head and Saxon, were out in front of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWoBHM) movement.
With their self-titled debut album, Maiden stood tall as they pushed out a set of nine galvanized metal tracks, which, with the help of front man Paul Di'Anno, leaned ever so slightly into a punk sound here 'n' there. Behind galloping riffs, thumping bass runs, and Will Malone's primitive production, Maiden introduced the world to the likes of the galloping "Running Free", plus "Prowler", "Remember Tomorrow", "Phantom of the Opera", "Strange World", and the menacing three-minute midevil title track.
This isn't Black Sabbath gloom 'n' doom metal. By contrast, Maiden carved out their own style, largely due to the endless hours of work 'n' dedication put in by bassist Steve Harris. The seed was sewn... and bigger things were on the horizon for Maiden.
Up the Irons!
