Album
Piece of Mind is the fourth studio album by British heavy metal band Iron Maiden. It was originally released in 1983 on EMI, and on Capitol in the US; it was reissued later on Sanctuary/Columbia Records. It was the first album to feature drummer Nicko McBrain, who had recently left the Paris-based band Trust and has been Iron Maiden's drummer ever since.
The album ranked 21 on IGN's list of the top 25 metal albums.
In 1983, Kerrang! magazine published a poll of the greatest metal albums of all time, with Piece of Mind ranking number 1, and with The Number of the Beast at number 2.There is no denying it, Iron Maiden peaked during the early and mid-80's. Coming off the lengthy The Number of the Beast world tour, Steve Harris and company, including newest member, drummer Nicko McBrain, wasted little time preparing songs for the follow-up to 1982's ...Beast album. Armed with ideas from months on the road, Maiden hit the studio with confidence and aggression, laying down another set of Euro metal monsters for their fourth full length LP, Piece of Mind.
With an insane Eddie locked away in a padded cell, the boys let loose with trademark galloping riffs, thumping bass runs and a thundering backbeat, all laced together by the killer pipes of Bruce "The Human Air Raid Siren" Dickinson. This disc rode the momentum of previous releases and took Maiden to new heights internationally. Behind the production work of studio guru Martin Birch, Maiden ripped throughout Piece of Mind, with the inspired opener "Where Eagles Dare", plus "The Trooper", "Die With Your Boots On" and "To Tame a Land" leading the way.
In 1998, an enhanced compact disc of Piece of Mind was issued. The CD features the popular non-LP Maiden single, "Flight of Icarus", plus a special multimedia section.
