The band was started under the name Diamond Lie in 1984, which consisted of Jerry Cantrell on guitar, Mike Starr on bass and Sean Kinney on drums. After Jerry and Layne Staley met in 1987, Diamond Lie and Layne's previous band Alice 'n Chainz transformed into Alice in Chains, and the rest was history.
