Об исполнителе (группе)
This is another one-voice-to-a-part version, an approach that was unique when Joshua Rifkin recorded the Mass in B Minor (Fanfare 6:6) but is now a respected alternative to other ways of performing Bach’s great sacred works. Sigiswald Kuijken is charged with the direction (not conducting) of the ensemble, which consists of 11 singers and 22 players. Three of the singers are needed only for such characters as Pilate (exactly as Butt did), and Kuijken is leader of the violins (he also plays gamba). This is the third recording of this work with such forces, following Paul McCreesh (27:1) and John Butt (31:6, where the earlier one was not mentioned). It cannot be overlooked that the recording was made from Palm Sunday to Holy Thursday last year.
The singers deserve high marks. Christoph Genz is a bright-voiced Evangelist, while Jan van der Crabben makes the most of the role of Jesus. The choruses need just eight voices to attain their full effect. I quibble at only one point: Kuijken asserts that the chorale line in the opening chorus must be taken by one soprano, the singer who is waiting to take the roles of maids and Pilate’s wife. But what was the Thomanerchor doing while a few adults were singing the entire Passion for the composer? I can accept the argument for one voice to a part and still wonder why it isn’t obvious that the boys would sing just the chorale in the opening movement, as so many modern performances are set up. The scoring of the independent chorale, clearly apart from the double choir, calls for a special treatment of the melody. The problem here is being able to hear the soprano’s voice, which can hardly be picked out even when one knows to listen for it. Just to check, I went back to hear what I remembered. Fritz’s Lehmann’s large forces in 1949 (boys’ choir uncredited), Hermann Scherchen’s pretty large forces in 1953 (boys’ choir uncredited), Mogens Wöldike’s not-so-large forces in 1959 (the boys of the Schottenstift), and even Hermann Max’s rather small forces in 1995 (quadruple those of Kuijken, with four women on the chorale) came through as thrilling in the chorale melody but otherwise lacking the clarity of Kuijken’s ensemble. I missed only the chorale tune in Kuijken, but I missed the clarity even more in all the rest. With that reservation, I greet this stunning performance as the way to hear this masterpiece.
