A few bars of this Decca record leave no doubt as to its excellence. This offers demonstration quality, transparent and refined, with the textures beautifully balanced and expertly placed. This is one of my favorite recordings. The warm and balanced sound of the Montreal Orchestra under Dutoit, delves you into another world, no longer listening to technique, but being part of this fairy tale (Ma Mere L’Oye). Le Tombeau de Couperin is played with the same air and balance. The sound quality is beautifully captured by Decca’s engineers. – “A Customer”, amazon.com
This album was so well engineered that when it was first issued it won the year’s Gramophone award (1985) for engineering. All that needs to be said on that front therefore is that it still sounds exceptionally faithful. Charles Dutoit and the Montreal orchestra were regular favourites at that time, and Dutoit seems well suited to the reserved and fastidious world of Ravel. This album in particular features music that is especially suited to such an approach. Every piece is meticulously crafted, and Dutoit truly shines. – “Another Customer”, amazon.com
