CESAR FRANCK (1822—1890), a French composer and organist of
Belgian origin, was destined by his father for the career of a concert
pianist. He studied the piano at the Conservatoire of his native town
of Liege. Later on the family moved to Paris in order to enable the boy
to develop his exceptional musical gift more speedily. For a short time
Cesar was a private pupil of the Czech composer and theoretician,
Antonin Rejcha. Between 1837 and 1842 he studied the piano and
composition at the Paris Conservatoire. After completing his studies
he spent another two years in Belgium and finally, in 1844, he settled
down permanently in Paris. However, while still at the Conservatoire,
the young Franck felt more drawn towards the art of composition
than the career of a pianist. He excelled particularly in the composition
of fugues and achieved many outstanding successes in this sphere. Here
originated his interest in organ playing which for a long time
determined the direction of his musical activity. He became successively
organist in the Notre Dame de Lorette and the church of St Jean and St
Francois du Marais, and the master in St Clotilde. By this time
he had already composed several compositions. His most famous
works, symphonic poems, the Symphony in D minor and chamber
music pieces which placed him among the greatest artists of his time,
were written late in life.
Franck's only symphony which today ranks with the most frequently
played compositions of the symphonic repertoire, did not, at first,
find favor with either the public or the critics. After its first
performance at the Societe des Concerts du Conservatoire in 1889 numerous
objections were heard, concerning especially its form. The symphony
was criticized for its simplified, pedantic structure, its split, mosaic
themes, lack of inner drama and so on. While not even today a
certain, out-of-the ordinary character of Franck's symphonic conception
can be denied (it becomes especially apparent in the frequently
occurring parallel placement of themes as if they were mere
quotations of "leitmotifs"), we find in this work many exploratory values
which were discovered only later on. It is, above all, the peculiar
ethical enthusiasm which radiates from each bar of Franck's music
and whose counterpart we might be able to find only in Beethoven's
works. The nature of his themes is so self-evident and comprehensible
that they are understandable not only in their mutual correlation
but perceived directly as elementary musical ideas. Only someone who
has attained the highest creative maturity could have achieved success
in this way. The individual method in which each movement is
built is balanced by the original conception of the whole work. The
Symphony is in three movements based on the cyclical principle.
In the final movement the composer uses motifs from the preceding
movements and in this way achieves a unique dramatic unity and
effect. Thanks to this monumental austerity and tautness Franck's
Symphony ranks with the most famed compositions of symphonic music.
