What is it that distinguishes the music of Parween Sultana, undoubtedly one of the most popular Hindustani vocalists, from the younger set?
Firstly it is her highly individual approach to music. She was groomed by Pandit Chinmoy Lahiri and has shown talent and imagination to shape her singing in the clear Patiafa manner—a style made so delightfully familiar by the great Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, who was the gharana's arch-priest
The other two masters from whom Parween Sultana took extensive training are her father, Ustad Akram-ul-Majid and her husband, Ustad Mohd. Dilshad Khan.
Secondly. Parween is gifted with a voice marked by an uncommon range of three octaves. She has moulded it to lend itself to her musical ideas and intuitions as few others can.
The most important feature of her performance is that she has developed her own captivating style which has substantially contributed to her popularity.
Thirdly, she is also endowed with a striking stage presence which helps her to establish immediate rapport with her listeners.
All these virtues combine to make her music what it is today—brilliant, vivacious and sensuous. Her "alap" presents an uncanny blend of "swarai" and "bol-taan", white her taans—now cascading, now undulating in their final movements—make the listener breathless.
This new disc unfolds yet another facet of her artistic being: her finesse for shaping the complex substance of intricate compound ragas with a spontaneity and charm. The exposition of Raga Sarang-Kauns on Side One is a shining example of Parween's ingenuity and craftsmanship. The "raga" as also its "vilambit" and "drat" compositions (innovated by her gifted husband. Ustad Mphd. Dilshad Khan) represent a fusion of Sarang and Malkauns both of which belong to two different "thaats". But the unfolding bears the distinctive identity of a new musical mode which, in its hue and character, sounds completely different from its component ragas—and it is Parween's musicianship that makes this possible.
