From her modest beginnings as a shy acoustic folkie on the local coffeehouse stage, Jill Barber’s career has also been looking up. With the release of her fourth album Mischievous Moon, a stunning concoction of sweeping strings and dramatic orchestration backing Barber’s unmistakable contralto, Jill Barber’s evolution to confident chanteuse is complete.
Inspired by the great ladies of song like Ella Fitzgerald and Edith Piaf, Barber reached for a place on the international stage with the release of her last record, 2008’s Chances. It was a turning point in her career, says Barber. “I think it’s important to experiment and try on a number of musical hats to a point, but eventually you have figure out what your own contribution is going to be. When I finished writing and recording Chances something clicked and I suddenly realized that I was no longer pretending to be an artist, I had become one.”
As a performer, Jill Barber charms her audiences while weaving a romantic spell. Indeed, romance plays a huge role in both her life and her art. “My previous album represented the courtship phase of my career”, she muses. “With Mischievous Moon, we’re getting intimate. The romance is alive and well, but there’s something deeper to be uncovered. The moon has such a venerable presence in the night sky, keeping one eye on us. I don’t know about everyone else, but sometimes it feels like we have our own private jokes, the moon and I. From time to time I can’t help but look up and give it a little wink.
Now, with Mischievous Moon, Barber reteams with producer Les Cooper to ratchet up the atavistic gooiness several degrees, her Minnie Mouse-meets-Brenda Lee voice immersed in soggy, string-drenched arrangements. This time, the artifice ventures beyond Chances’ Jazz Age-esque confines, extending to the faux-’60s fizz of “Took Me by Surprise,” the mock Parisian bal-musette of “If It Weren’t for Loving You” and the quirky Old West showdown “Tell Me.” Still, there are several fine songs buried among all the excess, particularly Barber and Cooper’s cunning “Steal Away,” their furtive “Dis Moi” and, best of all, their teaming with Ron Sexsmith on the bright and breezy “Any Fool Can Fall in Love.”
'Four years ago, Canadian folksinger Jill Barber reinvented herself as a smoky chanteuse with the lush Chances. Thanks largely to its catchy “Oh My My,” the album ignited a rapturous outpouring of praise across her native land, and she was heralded as the second coming of Edith Piaf or even Ella Fitzgerald. Not so fast. While the album demonstrated laudable pluck and confirmed Barber’s status as a solid songwriter, her retro-fashioned bleating seemed more a parlor trick, an elaborate game of dress-up, than a sustainably valid style.' (Christopher Loudon, JazzTimes)

"From the initial soaring strings, glamour beckons. Barber's voice, Moon's most poignant instrument, alternates smoothly between little girl purr and full strength soar ... Barber's transition from folkie to femme fatale is complete."

The first notes of the first song on this album fill you with foreboding: brushed drums, a simple string bassline, and even simpler piano chords played in pulsing eighth notes, Fats Domino style. Sweet Mother of Claudine Longet, you wonder, what have I gotten myself into? Then Jill Barber's voice comes in, with that unmistakable mid-century blend of little-girl timbre and orotund vowels, and you have your answer: you've gotten yourself into a mess of nostalgia, and the only thing that will deliver you to the other side of these 41 minutes with your sanity intact will be the quality of the songs. Luckily for you, these are great songs. Also luckily for you, Jill Barber and her co-conspirators recognize no functional difference between torch ballads, Patsy Cline-era country music, and cocktail jazz. Best of all, if their love of these various musical anachronisms is ironic, it's impossible to tell -- the wordless background vocals, the plinking pianos, the string sections, and Barber's little-girl-about-town singing style all combine to create what sounds like a purely and sincerely loving pastiche of musical elements that, for anyone under the age of 60, will sound both eerily familiar (from movies your parents like) and utterly foreign. From the decorous cha-cha of "Took Me by Surprise" (with its unbelievably cheesy horn chart) to the torchy orchestral pop of "Tenderness," the music is certainly gimmicky, but the pleasure is real. And this is pop music, people: pleasure is pretty much all that counts.
