When Rhiannon Giddens was awarded a MacArthur "Genius Grant" in 2017, the foundation lauded the North Carolina songwriter for "reclaiming African American contributions to folk and country music." On her third solo album, the Carolina Chocolate Drops singer connects the dots of influence that African and Arabic music have had in Europe and America; joining her is Italian fellow multi-instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi. To communicate the message of the album—a rebuke of cultural and societal "othering"—the two lead by example. Giddens has performed "Gonna Write Me a Letter" by Appalachian folk hero Ola Belle Reed in concert for years, but here the mountain music gets a Middle Eastern rethink. Meanwhile, the spare blues of original "I'm On My Way" is overlaid with Iranian daf. That frame drum also anchors the stunning instrumental title track, alongside Giddens’ minstrel banjo. As always, the singer’s warm, soulful voice is the star of the show. So often compared to Nina Simone, Giddens’ vocals on arias "Black Swan" and the delicate "Trees on the Mountain," along with the sexy-jazz spin on Italian folk song "Pizzica di San Vito" further bridges tradition with the present.
