Об исполнителе (группе)
Franco Ambrosetti
was born in Lugano, Switzerland, on December 10th, 1941.
His father is Flavio Ambrosetti, alto-saxophonist, bandleader and BeBop pioneer in the European jazz scene in the 1940’s. He studied classical piano for nearly 9 years, then switched to trumpet at the age of 17, completely self-taught.
Franco Ambrosetti has had dual careers as a very successful businessman, and as a fine trumpeter and flügelhornist inspired by Freddie Hubbard and Miles Davis. His father Flavio Ambrosetti was an excellent saxophonist. Franco had piano lessons for eight years but is self-taught on trumpet, which he did not take up until he was 17. In 1972, he was one of the founders of the George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band, and through the years he has recorded quite a few worthy hard bop-ish albums for Enja in addition to leading his own groups.
Об альбоме (сборнике)
Ambrosetti's best solo album ever. At the height of his powers, the Swiss trumpetist shows why he is one of the top all-time flugelhorn players, alongside Clark Terry, Art Farmer, Freddie Hubbard and Chuck Mangione. Don Sebesky provides sumptuous scores in the lush CTI style, and contributes with two original tunes: the haunting title track "Sleeping Gypsy" (the guitar intro recalls the Jay Berliner performance on "For Someone I Love," from the Sebesky-arranged Milt Jackson's "Sunflower" album) and the fusion-oriented "Lugano Lady."
There's also an inspired version of Hoagy Carmichael's "Skylark" (a tune he had arranged for CTI sessions by Paul Desmond and Roland Hanna, this time a vehicle for a great solo by Eddie Daniels on tenor), and lovely ballads by Stephen Sondheim ("Johanna") and Tito Fontana ("Demoiselle.")
This album puts the emphasis on ballads and the mellow tone of flugelhornist Franco Ambrosetti. Don Sebesky's arrangements for a full orchestra generally avoid being sleepy, and there are spots for Eddie Daniels (on flute and tenor), guitarist Joe Beck, pianist George Gruntz and Barry Miles on synthesizer, but it is largely Ambrosetti's playing that is most noteworthy. The repertoire consists of a pair of obscurities, two Sebesky pieces, and "Skylark." Overall, the obscure project is worthwhile, but not too essential.
