When it comes to music that it is labeled "Celtic" there seems to be a pretty wide swath of interpretation. Apparently some feel that Erin's Gate or the "River Dance" sound represents authentic Celtic; others will tell you that Enya is it; and still others will say that only traditional clog dancing fiddle tunes are the real deal. I am of the opinion that true Celtic music is music played by musicians of Celtic ancestry, influenced by historically true Celtic tunes (Are we talking "Danny Boy" here or Richie Blackmore [he of Deep Purple-turned-Celtic rock and roll fame]? The Chieftans or Loreena McKennett?). The final answer, I have determined, is that Celtic music is about as easily defined as New Age. I think it comes down to what pleases your ears.
That said, I'm going to recommend "Celtic Destiny" unabashedly. Bruce Mitchell has an ear for lovely melodies, a spirit that soothes, and for those who insist upon having the ballad and clover Irish touch in their Celtic music, the influences that will have you seeing emerald green hills and pretty young lasses in your sleep at night. Neither as hauntingly beautiful, nor as irresistibly catchy as John Adorney's music, Mitchell's tunes are nonetheless moving. The album is memorable-- which is to say that the melodies stay with you long after you turn off the player --but not as fulfilling, again, as John Adorney's music. Still, if you're looking for music that will transport you to a happier place-- maybe to a recurring fantasy, a lost love, or a favorite childhood memory --you'll find "Celtic Destiny" a splendid dreamland express.(By C.
