Biography
Brighton duo Royal Blood channeled the blues-rock dynamism of the likes of White Stripes, Black Keys, and Two Gallants, yet they amped the ferocity and volume up with scuzzy riffs and blustering energy. Comprised of drummer Ben Thatcher and bassist/vocalist Mike Kerr, the two-piece formed at the beginning of 2013 when Kerr returned from a trip to Australia, and Thatcher picked him up from the airport. They managed to play their first show the very next day and continued to write new material throughout the year. Although constrained to just two instruments, they made their presence known with pounding drums and heavily distorted bass guitar that drove the melodic intensity of their songs, alongside Kerr's emotive vocals. They were championed by the BBC on their Sound of 2014 list, as well as Arctic Monkeys' Matt Helders, who wore their T-shirt during their headline 2013 Glastonbury performance and invited them to open their huge Finsbury Park shows. The duo then released the single "Out of the Black" and signed to Warner Bros. later that year.

New single 'Little Monster' does exactly what the Sussex duo's previous single did and more. 2013's 'Come On Over' and 'Into The Black' were rich in bellowed chants, riff-centric showboating. Clearly Mike Kerr and Ben Fletcher entered the frame more confident than any new band ought to be. 'Little Monster' somehow adds to this excitement. It borders on arrogance, but it never goes out of its depth.
There's Kerr's vocals (channelling some crazed fusion between a lust-ravaged Matt Bellamy and a less sinister Josh Homme), backed by Fletcher's insane drum solos and guitar sections that have festival tents and giant arenas right at the focus. To consider that this might not even be the sound of Royal Blood at the peak of their powers seems ludicrous, but any band capable of delivering this - on top of last year's jawdropping debut single - isn't one to underestimate.
