Produced by AFI’s own Jade Puget, Fancy Blood has his fingerprints littered over each track, reminiscing AFI’s sound as well as Davey Havok’s vocal style nearly symmetrically. The opening “No Boys In The Ballroom” begins with a crushing rhythm courtesy of the tri-guitar play of vocalist Ben Grey, Cole Martin, and Alix Peters. “Boys” belongs in arenas, as it features a soaring chorus and addictive hook, while the following title track “Fancy Blood” begins with soft whispers over dark palm mutes before launching into a dance-like track.
“Mr. Sinister” parallels the aforementioned tracks stylistically, featuring the memorable yet simple line: “Good girls make great mistakes”. While up to this point all seems poppy and filled massive choruses, “Business Colors” features a slower side of Scarlet Grey, channeling Anberlin. Likewise, the closing highlight “The Sky And I” appropriately enough features AFI’s Davey Havok. A soft, ambient track, “The Sky” is simply fantastic; when the track picks up as Grey sings with Havok, Scarlet Grey doesn’t get any better than this ultimate track.
With the production of Fancy Blood flawless, the musicianship of Scarlet Grey crafted in unison, and the vocals of Ben Grey limitless, the talent of Scarlet Grey is simply sky-high. Through their ability to create addictive hooks and choruses while still embedding excellent song writing and musicianship into each track, Scarlet undoubtedly have an incredibly bright and boundless future ahead, as they’re sure to only continue up from here.
