Flood
Truly 1 of the greatest live jazz/fusion albums ever made. Recorded live in Tokyo 1975 these songs take on an amazing new live & raw character that one would expect from the master Herbie. Because this is a somewhat rare Japanese import there are still Herbie fans who don’t know about it yet & if that’s you then when you hear it you are in for a wonderful surprise.

by progboy February 6, 2011:
I must admit that I still love fusion rock & funk & Hancock’s “Flood Live” gives us a lot of both ! With heavy emphasis on the “Thrust” album & a bit of “Head Hunters”, Hancock & his crew deliver a live album of epic magnitude !
I have always loved both Head Hunters & Thrust but clearly this live album takes us into a whole different world & makes these songs come to life in a very different way. Opening the album is the sole piano solo of Herbie & his opus “Maiden Voyage” which then switches to the funk space fusion material & where we really take off.
Musically this album is superb but I find the sonics for SACD to be just so-so. Too bad cause if this 1 had the sonic snap of many SACD’s then this would have been the most desirable SACD on this site. I find the high’s too muted for this mix. I don’t own the original to compare it to & only have the studio albums which have been very well re-mastered. The 1 thing I would say is that it is still a very rich full sound just not as dynamic as it could have been. This is the same condition I found with a number of SACD’s (ie. Pretenders)…..the sound is good but just not as Fantastic as SACD can be!
