Kegel虽然出身于劳动阶级家庭,然而不甚富裕的家境却能给他在音乐方面的支持,父亲买给他一台钢琴,而小时候的Kegel,似乎也注定了一辈子固执孤傲的怪脾气:当同年龄的儿童都在外面玩耍时,没有朋友的Kegel一个人敲着琴键……
1935年,他少年的时期正值希特勒开始掌权,同时Karl Bohm接掌德累斯顿国立歌剧院音乐总监职。歌剧院音乐总监,是德累斯顿一地音乐的象征。身为音乐学校的学生, 克格尔没有直接受到Bohm的指导,但从Bohm的指挥,倒是得到一点一滴的学习,只是一开始Kegel并没有当指挥的意思,而是学习钢琴及作曲。他的毕业考演出曲目是拉赫曼尼诺夫的钢琴协奏曲。
二次世界大战爆发,Kegel被征召到东线战场,在基辅受了重伤,回到家乡静养。此时,遇到盟军的“德累斯顿大空袭”,德累斯顿化为一片火海,国立歌剧院也变成废墟。负伤之故,Kegel只好放弃钢琴家的梦,转向指挥一途。一开始在Pirna地方歌剧院工作。莱比锡广播合唱团招募指挥,从这里踏出他与莱比锡长达三十年合作关系的第一步。里头可能有些音乐上的考虑,Kegel是用来抗衡以浪漫风格著称的柏林合唱团指挥Helmut Koch。此年为公元1949年,德意志民主共和国成立。同年十月,还发生一件事:Hermann Abendroth就任莱比锡广播交响乐团音乐总监。莱比锡人的Abendroth时年六十六岁,从1943年开始到大战结束,接替被纳粹放逐的 Bruno Walter,任莱比锡布商大厦管弦乐团指挥。大战结束后,转任魏玛歌剧院,在莱比锡广播交响乐团创立二十周年纪念演奏会上指挥,获得听众的热烈的反响,希望Abendroth能回到莱比锡担任音乐总监。
1953年,莱比锡广播交响乐团助理指挥出现空缺。在社会主义体制下的新时代音乐,Abendroth选择了Kegel。1956 年,Abendroth去世,两年后,Kegel接任莱比锡广播交响乐团第一指挥,1960年秋天,就任首席指挥。Abendroth的继任者,对德意志民共和国有着重要的意义。当时东德独裁领导者是乌布利希特,而Abendroth正有着乌布利希特的“民间友人、国家顾问官”的称号,是德意志民主共和国全体的音乐象征。莱比锡广播交响乐团,也不只是单纯服务于广播的乐团,而是这位特别的指挥者一手带出来的子弟兵。这种情况下,年轻的Kegel如何延续莱比锡广播交响乐团的传统,指挥Abendroth遗留下的曲目,担子之重是不难想见的。
大战毁损了大部分的广播资料,旧磁带或醋酸盘都毁于战火中,或被盟军搜刮一空。战后德意志民主共和国的财政困难,也没有能力向西方的音乐家或乐团购买版权。大部分的音乐,从轻歌剧,到交响曲,都要重新录制。身为广播交响乐团,Kegel当然演出一场又一场的音乐会,再加上当时的政治局势,不但 Bartok、Kodalyi、Janacek、Shostakovich都是常见曲目,Kegel也常在社会主义国家间进行巡演。
布鲁克纳是Abendroth的招牌曲,而Kegel也势必接下这份遗产。聆听Kegel在就任常任指挥前后的录音,我们能够充分感受到这一点。这,大概也是Abendroth的遗言在作祟吧。要经过十年的时间,Kegel的意志才能传达给整个乐团。1951年演出勃拉姆斯 Schicksalslied fur Chor und Orchester op.54,1961、1962年布拉姆斯交响曲第一第四号,1971年勃拉姆斯第二交响曲,乐团整齐度的进步显而易听。Kegel的诠释方面,60年粗糙毛躁的风格,像是不修边幅的野人,例如第一号常常滥用定音鼓,本来应该是“神来一笔”的鼓声敲得又急又重,整体逻辑缺乏说服力;快速的节拍,粗犷的运弓,刺耳的铜管,是只能顾及大局却无法顾及细节的演出。这个时期的演出,以《依海登主题的变奏曲》水平相对较高一些。但十年后再次聆听他们演奏的勃拉姆斯第二交响曲,让人顿觉耳目一新,乐团音色整齐划一而富有弹性,细部上的变化也显得更加丰富多彩,虽然发疯似的忽然猛敲定音鼓的现象仍会偶尔出现,但与十年前相比已经有了“天壤之别”般的改观。虽然有人称这部交响曲是勃拉姆斯的“田园”,但此时的Kegel,听不到悠然的田野风味,而是年轻自得的意气风发、充满自信与自负的豪快演出。进入80年代的Kegel又到了另一个境界,与德累斯顿爱乐(1977年接任首席指挥)演绎的贝多芬交响曲全集,是个温暖平易的演出,乐团水平整齐,音乐自然开展,挑不出大错误,与许多个人化的演出相比,喜欢重口味的会觉得太过平淡,但质朴有质朴的美,人总不能天天生活在紧张刺激,总不能天天都坐云霄飞车,“悠然见南山”的心境似乎也是随着年龄的自然转变吧。
Kegel的要求很高,对自己与他人都是如此,固执的怪脾气使得他很难与人相处,这也包括了三次失败的婚姻。排练时他常常失去耐性,对团员大吼大叫,并冒出些侮辱的字眼。他无法忍受心目中的完美诠释与乐团的现实表现相差太远。1980年他为德意志民主共和国电视台演出布列顿《战争安魂曲》,电视演出的前置作业时间很短,但Kegel仍然为谱上琐碎的小细节反复练习。人家问他:这既非为录音演出,(没有video tape的年代)公众也只会听到这么一次,不完美过了以后就不会再回来。Kegel回答:Even with a work which can only be heard once there is no room for sloppiness. Whether it be a concert, a television broadcast or a record, I always want the best. Kegel对现代音乐的要求也很严苛。他说:If we cannot ehearse Mozart in the proper way, everybody in the audience will realize that it is our fault. If we rehearse a work of modern composer not thoroughtly enough, the audience mig
ht think that it is a bad work. But such a judgement, gentlemen, would not be fair to the composer!
1988年,德意志民主共和国共党总书记何内克下台;次之,柏林围墙倒塌。1989年,东西德统一,社会主义阵营解体,德意志民主共和国正式成为历史名词。统一后的东德经济情况不佳,许多剧院关闭,乐手外流,音乐会的场次也减少。过去数十年Kegel的生活目标就是工作,而今日似乎都消失了;忽然多出一大堆时间,又不知怎么填补的Kegel发现他要面对的是昨是今非的世界,充满敌意的环境。他所爱的妻儿住在遥远的柏林,只有很少的时间才会来探望他;同时他的身体状况又变差,对现实感的认知不断模糊;有关自传的写作计划又中断了,因为出版社财务困难,没有钱,也没有朋友。1989年年底,在他空旷的大房子里Kegel用手枪结束了他的生命。
Kegel在死前不久,道出“基本上我是一个浪漫主义者”。我们很难想象这位脾气固执待人严苛又注重实际的完美主义者会说出这样的话。无论如何,诸如Kabasta或Kegel等悲剧性的人物总是在提醒我们,一个人的失意通常与他的能力是没有关系的。
