One is constantly reminded of legendaryperformances from the past, and Bychkov's richly conceived andpenetrating interpretations rank with them, without doubt. IfWalter, Szell, or Toscanini come to mind, it is because Bychkov'sstandards are just as high, and he inspires his orchestra todeliver truly noble performances that meet his extraordinarydemands. It may be equally extraordinary to say that Bychkov'shumanity and spirit permeate these sublime performances, but thereis a real generosity of expression that could only come from thispassionate conductor; and it is not unreasonable to note that themusic's warmth, subtlety, and clarity reflect Bychkov's ability tocommunicate with his musicians. The spacious grandeur in theSymphony No. 1, the jubilant excitement in the Symphony No. 2, thepensive yearning in the Symphony No. 3, and the decisive power inthe Symphony No. 4 can be credited to Bychkov's profoundunderstanding of the scores and his exceptional rapport with theorchestra. Hearing these recordings is a deeply satisfyingexperience, and this set is absolutely recommended.
