His recent mixes on the Renaissance label have been dark, dismal things -- apparently, EDM is headed in a low-tone, chin-down direction -- but this four disc set (five, if you count the package of unmixed ingredients that come with the MP3 purchase) is a return to the up-beat, effervescent era of the genre, back when it was about driving home a sweat-soaked, dance-heavy slab of sonics.
The discs actually start on a down-tempo note, but even songs named "Slow" heavily salt their languid loops with a heavy dash of groove and funk. With these kinds of track choices and effortless mixing, Digweed manages to keep the entire thing -- nearly five hours long -- from dragging too much or losing any of its personality. There are a few spots where the tone becomes redundant, but these are forgettable next to the mastery of the rest of it, especially Disc 3, which is clearly the peak of the set.
Also, the fact that it's mixed live really adds to the expansive, infectious nature of the music. Most house-heads and EDM lovers have, at some time or another, been to clubs or parties or raves where the sheer energy of the place seems to bolster the music more than the notes itself. While you might appreciate a mix at home, alone, listening on headphones, or in your car, there's a different tenor to it when the music is spraying out over an amped-up and frenetically dancing crowd. The acoustics of the live recording give the albums the barest hint of that environment, the size of the crowd, the excitement, the fact that the audience is so clearly on pace with where the beats are heading. It translates excellently to the record and gives it a livelier and more contagious feel than it might otherwise have.
Plus, the current price for this set (nine dollars!) is stupid cheap. You not only get nearly five hours of smooth, expert mixing, but also a collection of the unabridged versions of the songs. If you're a fan of EDM or house in general, then you have absolutely no excuse for not getting this album in the MP3 format. You won't regret it.
