These are the boldest new Beethoven recordings I have heard in years. Honeck has something to say, and some might find his approach too aggressive, but I think it is exactly what these pieces need, instead of the average, anodyne over-refinement so common today. The microphones are slightly closer for the 5th, so there's a level change between works, but the sound is otherwise excellent. The best testimonial about this recording is that I heard the finale on the radio (WOSU, Columbus, Ohio) and had to stop what I was doing to find out whose performance it was so I could immediately order it. Simply tremendous.
