简介:
Revealing the subtle influences of Debussy and Bill Evans, these beautiful, intense, often dark interpretations of various jazz standard ballads, along with four of Beirach's own compositions, are a wonderful listening experience. They are the result of Richie Beirach being asked by Sony to record a solo piano album in Tokyo in 1986. The recording quality is superb, and the 16-page booklet, with the beautiful blue sea-and-skyscape art and design cover of Yasutaka Kato, contains Beirach's notes on his choices of tunes and on his interpretations of them, both in English and Japanese. The four of Beirach's own compositions are interpersed throughout the recording (Elm, Nightlake, Leaving, and Sunday Song). The standards he interprets are: My Foolish Heart, Infant Eyes, Blood Count, On Green Dolphin Street, Naima, Small World, Over the Rainbow, and You Don't Know What Love Is. This quality and lyrical "Ballads" recording can be seen as the first of a trilogy that Beirach did for Sony, others being "Ballads II" (1987, same cover design but in green) and "Water Lilies" (1987), confirming Beirach's fascination with impressionism as it contains musical interpretations of Claude Monet's paintings. Unfortunately, now all three are not readily available.
