简介:
Originally released in early 1963, Monk's Dream was the 1st Thelonious Monk album for Columbia. At the time this was recorded (1st sessions on Halloween, 1962), he had become 1 of the preeminent figures in contemporary jazz. His move to Columbia put him in the company of a couple of the era's other major talents & commercial successes, Miles Davis & Dave Brubeck, & his quartet was stabilized for a couple years with tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse (with him since 1958), bassist John Ore, & drummer Frankie Dunlop. This album set the format for his succeeding works for the label over the next 6 years: a few standards mixed with originals, most of which had been recorded earlier in his career (the only new composition is "Bright Mississippi," itself a variation on the chordal structure of "Sweet Georgia Brown"). However, these performances find Monk in exuberant good cheer. His playing sparkles with invention & the relaxation & calm of a career in well-deserved ascension. Critically under-celebrated in its day, Monk's Dream is rich with the confidence of a band at its peak.

"Monk's Dream is the Columbia Records debut release featuring the Thelonious Monk Quartet... the tight -- almost telepathic -- dimensions that these 4 shared has rarely been equalled in any genre... precious few musicians understood the layer upon layer of complexities & challenges that Monk's music created. On tracks such as 'Five Spot Blues' & 'Bolivar Blues,' Rouse & Dunlop demonstrate their uncanny abilities by squeezing in well-placed instrumental fills, while never getting hit by the unpredictable rhythmic frisbees being tossed about by Monk... Monk's Dream is recommended, with something for every degree of Monk enthusiast." ~

With the arrival of Thelonious Sphere Monk, modern music-let alone modern culture-simply hasn't been the same. Recognized as 1 of the most inventive pianists of any musical genre, Monk achieved a startlingly original sound that even his most devoted followers have been unable to successfully imitate. His musical vision was both ahead of its time & deeply rooted in tradition, spanning the entire history of the music from the 'stride' masters of James P. Johnson & Willie 'the Lion' Smith to the tonal freedom & kinetics of the 'avant garde.' This important album, Monk's 1st after a long absence from the recording studio, is a stunning reaffirmation of his power as a performer & composer. It is a brilliant & absorbing program of 5 Monk originals & 3 standards.
