Reviews from SA-CD.net:
By TROLL-Buster:
In view of the discussions re the Gergiev disc I thought I would review this version of the 1812 which I can compare favourably with three other versions on sacd and 20 plus on vinyl.
The choice of an 1812 should not be based on the way the cannons or muskets sound. This says more about the reviewer than the music,of which their is plenty.
Historically I always liked the Decca Alwyn version and to me the additional works on the disc count as most important.
Regretably the SACD Telarcs failed for the reasons already stated. One for the very odd coupling as well.
The Membran 1812 is exceptional with its Russian conducter and good choice of couplings.Pity his Italian trips seemed to have been during cold weather.Again as previously reviewed.
However Marriners version is also exceptionally clean for want of a better description.Very satisfying and musical which will help you occasionally return to this disc. The Cap Italien starts the disc and is well worth having. To me the bonus is the excellent possibly under rated March Slave hardly over recorded in sacd and the more than adequate version of Franchesca.
There is obviously a greater historic version of this work which I cherish but the cleaner cut lines of Marriner has some benefits.I suppose they could have sequenced the well filled disc without the Marche Slave just prior to the 1812 but that is knitpicking.
I am only reviewing this stereo layer but the liner notes indicate it was a 5.1 recording TascamHR78/Pyramix.Original superjewel case and decent liner notes German/English.One of two bargain versions which you cannot go wrong.
