The Fifth Symphony troubled Mahler, both due to its critical reception ("The Fifth is a cursed work. Nobody understands it") and during the composition process. Mahler already revised the work shortly after the premiere so as to make all the details stand out even more clearly, and then again in 1907 ("a vast number of retouches"), and again on several occasions until shortly before his death. Unlike the composer's previous symphonies, this work is not concerned with fragility, irony and possibly a distant Utopia, but with what could be termed a temporal synthesis. Mahler attempts to merge the poly- phonic forces using all the artistic devices at his disposal; this contrapuntal form gives rise to orchestral virtuosity.
