"Tango is a melancholy thought you can dance to" said Enrique Santos Discépolo, one of the most famous artists of this genre. At the beginning of the 19th century many immigrants, especially Italians, flocked to the capital of Argentina. The people dreamed of a better life but soon had to face the reality of social hostility. Of all their dashed hopes, only the Tango remained: an elegant dance with a sensual side. This was a dance that enabled the men to get very close to the few women, giving them the chance to express their strength, fears and loneliness through this music.
Composers like Astor Piazolla, Oscar Emilio (Cacho) Tirao and Oliviero Lacagnina were so fascinated by the Tango that they were moved to pay homage to this music by composing their own tango works.
