These splendid mid-"70s recordings of Beethoven"s First and Sixth symphonies with Kurt Masur leading the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig have been kicking around the European catalogs for 30 years, but they have rarely been available in America except as imports of widely varying quality. Back in the days of LPs, there was a sumptuous Philips box set with warm, lush sound on clear, clean discs. And then there were hideous single discs on Eterna, with harsh, constricted sound on warped, scratchy discs. Back in the early days of CDs, they were re-released on Philips with cooler, leaner sound on absolutely silent discs. But through all their incarnations, these mid-"70s recordings have never been released in their true form. Originally recorded in quadraphonic sound, the stereo LPs of the time never found a way to satisfactorily replicate the sound of the master tapes, and the CD reissue merely reproduced the stereo LPs. Now, PentaTone has for the first time finally released the recordings in their original quadraphonic form. The result is no real revelation. While the sound is a bit deeper and fuller than it had been on the previous CD reissue, it is still no warmer or clearer and certainly no more splendid, and although fans of these performances will no doubt want to hear this disc, the unconverted will remain unconverted. As for the performances themselves, they are energetically conducted by Masur and enthusiastically played by the Gewandhausorchester, but they are nothing special. The First is funky but not as witty as it could be, while the Sixth is more rustic than it should be.
