This is a fine performance here of the First Brahms Piano Concerto by Clifford Curzon and George Szell. This was one of the Decca Legends series and has been a Gramophone Recommended Recording for a long time. I looked forward to getting this disc given it's stellar reputation. And the performance of the Brahms Concerto is truly moving. However, the sound here is not the best with details being a bit dulled. The Franck and Litolff pieces do sound better however.

This is a classic performance of the Brahms Piano Concerto nr. 1. Sir Clifford Curzon was at the top of his considerable powers when he did this recording, and both Orchestra and conductor George Szell partner him ably.

Brahms composed two piano concertos and both works are quite different in character. Nr 1 has a more volatile (moody) feeling throughout, emotions vary frequently, and Curzon is able to catch and convey these fleeting moods without ever loosing the thrust of his line and the insights required to achieve a real inspired performance. Szell is at his best here, matching his soloist in creating the atmospheres for the various sections of the work.

The sound achieved by the japanese engeneers is excellent throughout, giving a richly detailed sound, which captures very truthfully the sound of the piano and various timbres of the orchestra. The winds, for example, get a marvelouslly warm sound.

A classic release, lovingly restored.
