肯普夫作为当代德国钢琴家受到普遍尊崇，是贝多芬、舒伯特、舒曼、勃拉姆斯钢琴作品的权威演奏家。他的弹奏以严谨含蓄、温暖由衷、音色如歌为特色，擅长演奏贝多芬钢琴作品。弹奏巴赫、舒伯特、舒曼等作家的作品也很出色。
虽然肯普夫的演绎对象包括巴赫、弗兰兹·李斯特、萧邦、约翰内斯·布拉姆斯、罗伯特·舒曼等。最为乐迷所推崇的则是他对于贝多芬与舒伯特的诠释。他录制了贝多芬和舒伯特全部钢琴奏鸣曲和其他作曲家钢琴作品的唱片。肯普夫录有舒伯特全部的奏鸣曲作品录音。贝多芬钢琴奏鸣曲全集留下了三套录音，后两套现在仍然是公认的权威演绎。并编辑出版了舒曼钢琴作品选集。作为作曲家，他创作了歌剧、芭蕾舞剧、交响乐、室内乐、钢琴和管风琴的作品。
