This 50CD box will certainly appeal the impecunious collector who would like to add a representative selection of major solo piano works and concertos to their library. It will, however, also appeal to those who would like examples of the work of some of the most significant pianists of the last fifty years and who do not mind - but in fact welcome - duplication of repetoire.
The discs, all taken from Universal Classics labels, contain performances that, sometimes outstanding, are never less than interesting and rewarding.
Included are, amongst other highlights, Bach from Schiff, Gavrilov and Gulda; Beethoven from Gulda (again), Kempff, Gilels, Serkin and Arrau; some wonderful Mozart from Clara Haskil; and outstanding Gershwin from Andre Previn.
There is a splendid Haydn disc from Richter; Brahms from Katchen, Rubinstein and Backhaus; Chopin from Argerich and Kocsis; a wonderful Lizst Sonata from Curzon; Schubert from Lupu, Kempff, Barenboim, and Kissin; Satie, Debussy, and Ravel from Roge; and some superb Mussorgsky from Berman.
Recording quality is excellent, as is the remastering. The booklet is, mainly, a track listing but does contain a short essay by the always interesting Jeremy Siepmann.
